Overseeded Bermuda
Bermuda is the most commonly used lawn grass in North Texas and is native to the area. Bermuda has a fine leaf texture, dark green color and mows at a medium height. Bermuda is resilient- it can endure high heat, drought and has a good cold tolerance – perfect for North Texas weather. Bermuda has a very low shade tolerance.

Tifway 419 is a type of Bermudagrass, but is smaller and has a finer leaf texture. Typically, Tifway 419 is used for lawns, athletic fields and golf course fairways. Its color ranges from Emerald green to dark green shades and is keeps its best appearance when mowed short. Tifway 419 usually requires more watering than regular Bermuda. It is highly resilient, enduring both high heat and cold. Tifway 419 has a very low shade tolerance.

St. Augustine is commonly used in semi-shaded areas. The leaf texture is coarse with a medium green color and medium mowing height. St. Augustine grass tolerates medium heat and drought, and medium cold. It adapts well in high humidity.

Palisade Zoysia is commonly used in semi-shaded areas. The leaf texture is medium with a dark green color and medium mowing height. Palisade Zoysia has a slow resilience and tolerates good heat, drought or cold.

Cavalier Zoysia is commonly used in semi-shaded areas. The leaf texture is very fine with a dark green color and short to medium mowing height. Cavalier Zoysia has a slow resilience and tolerates good heat, drought or cold.

Buffalo grass has a low shade tolerance. It is most commonly used in parks, roadways or other large areas where water supply may be limited. The leaf texture is fine with a medium color and medium to tall mowing height. If left unmowed, the maximum height averages about six inches. Buffalo grass has a high resilience, with tolerance to high heat, drought and cold. Buffalo grass requires low maintenance; however, if used as a lawn grass, maintenance is required to maintain a healthy turf for ornamental lawn purposes.

Centipede grass grows in the sun or in medium to heavy shade. Centipede grass must be planted in acidic soil. It has a good resilience with both good heat and cold tolerance.

Overseeded Bermuda is available in cool season months. This is Bermuda grass overseeded with Ryegrass. The Bermuda will go into dormancy and turn light brown when the cool season arrives in late fall. The Ryegrass will remain green throughout the cool season, usually until late spring. As the Ryegrass dies, the Bermuda transitions back to its green color. This process enables the property owner to have green grass year around. To continue this process annually, the Bermuda must be overseeded with Ryegrass each September.
